I’m not going to go all Pollyanna on you here, so don’t worry. Whatever happens with the possible toppling the Conservative minority government by legally elected MPs from other parties who might be able to secure the support of the Commons, this may be the sort of rapprochement needed to get the NDP and Liberals to spend less time slagging each other, and more time keeping in mind that Harper is far worse for most Canadians. I’m not naive, and I’m not going to suggest that everyone hold hands and sing Kumbaya or something, but still, having stronger ties between the Liberals and the NDP, and being able to figure out who is the real danger to Canada, is for the better in the long run.
I’m not going to predict a unite-the-left moment coming out of this or anything like that. But at the very minimum, this signals that we can expect a tough, functioning opposition from here on out. Harper can no longer govern as though he has a majority.
